About Guatemala

Located in Central America, Guatemala is known for its volcanic landscape, rainforests, and ancient Mayan sites, with coasts on both the Pacific Ocean and the Caribbean Sea. The country struggles with high rates of poverty, malnutrition, and crime, alongside challenges related to corruption and governance. Guatemala has a large indigenous population adding to the country's rich cultural tapestry. The nation also has a history of civil conflict and displacement. Recently, Guatemala has been spotlighted for migration issues, as many Guatemalans have been part of the migration flows towards the United States, fleeing poverty and violence.

Our focus in Guatemala

Our work in Guatemala is carried out in partnership with Fundación Junkabal, through its subsidiary, Junkacentro, focusing on supporting women in disadvantaged situations. We have invested in vocational training and micro-entrepreneurship programs specifically designed for women. Additionally, we are actively involved in advocacy for human rights both in Finland and locally, aiming to create a more inclusive and equitable society for the women we serve.

The project aimed to uplift women and girls living near Guatemala City's largest landfill through a certified 9-month skills training program. This initiative focused on economic empowerment by providing technical and financial literacy training in high-demand fields like pastry, beauty, social media management, and graphic design. Over two years, the project directly impacted 300 women, equipping them with the skills needed to improve their economic status and participate equally in society.
